Did You Know?

For just over a decade my family and I have been living in and remodeling one of the oldest houses in our village. Town records show our house was built in “1790?”. In other words, the house is old, but no one seems to know just how old. During the remodeling process we moved a stair case and began chipping away some plaster that covered the wall that used to be in the closet beneath those stairs. To our surprise we uncovered a portion of the adjoining, ancient central fireplace that no one seemed to know about. It appears to be a feature used for smoking meat or keeping water warm; neither appraisers nor brick layers we have consulted have ever seen anything quite like it. What is thought-provoking to me is that the people who owned the house before us were unaware of this rediscovered portion of fireplace. There is no telling how many people lived in this house without even realizing that the fireplace had these mysterious features.

The fireplace in our home serves as a reminder to me that we can sometimes live our lives in close proximity to something without really being familiar with it. It makes me wonder how many people have been around Christianity and church for years but may not have become familiar with some basic concepts that are clearly expressed in the Bible. Although all Christians claim the Bible as their source of faith, many times believers tend to be more familiar with their church traditions than with the Bible.

Listed below are some Biblical facts about major concepts within the Christian faith. Check them out. See how familiar you are with the facts. Scripture references are provided so you can go back to the Source.

Did You Know?

Angels: According to Jesus, when the end of the world nears, angels will be involved in bringing people into God’s Kingdom. Matthew 13:39

Healing: When Jesus gave “The Great Commission” he instructed Christians that they should “lay hands on the sick” and the sick would recover. Mark 16:17-18

Baptism: Every baptism recorded in the early church was administered in the name of the “Lord Jesus Christ” – or some variation of that phrase. Acts 2:38, 8:16, 10:48, 19:5

Holy Spirit: The Christian church was launched when Mary, the mother of Jesus, all the disciples except for Judas, and many others received the baptism of the Holy Ghost and spoke with “other tongues.” Acts 2:4

Faith: Jesus’ own brothers had trouble believing that he was God robed in flesh.

Ministry: It was not just the disciples who preached and performed miracles. Many other believers were used by God to do miracles and bring people to salvation. Acts 6:8, 8:13, 9:17.
