Junior
squirms in his chair at the breakfast bar fiddling with his silverware, fully
aware that he may soon lose his driving privileges. It is Saturday morning – reckoning time. His father has just confronted him on missing
his midnight curfew by nearly an hour.
With a deep breath Junior launches into a creative explanation. “Dad, I know that my curfew is midnight. But
since it’s summer and it doesn’t get dark until around 8:00 p.m. and since the
sun comes up 5:30 a.m., the middle of that dark time would be more like 1:00 a.m.,
wouldn’t it? So the way I figure it, 1:00
a.m. is midnight.” Will the father buy
his reasoning? Would you? Of course not!
Neither
will God buy our outlandish notions that six commandments are as good as ten,
that some lying is necessary, or that marriage can be defined by whatever suits
our fancy. God established moral laws
and I, for one, am glad those laws are immovable. Just as surely as I can count on midnight
being 12:00 a.m., I can count or right being right, wrong being wrong, and
family being what God defined family to be.
Unfortunately, our world culture is experiencing mass confusion -- all because we began believing the creative
explanations of people who messed up and wanted to talk their way out of being
held morally responsible.
What
is a person to do when their neighbors start calling 1:00am midnight? Does it really solve anything to move our
standards? Does it make sense to cave in
to people who are making up their own rules?
Do judges and presidents have a right to change the rules that the
Almighty Creator put in place? No, on
all counts. The solution is to point out
that the emperor has no clothes.
Midnight is midnight. The solution is to choose the sanity of holding
fast to the morals and values that have worked in hundreds of cultures for
thousands of years.
Some
day we will each stand before our Heavenly Father. For those who have truly trusted and obeyed
Him it will be a great day of promotion.
For those who have called themselves Christians while rejecting what
Christ taught, it will be a rude awakening.
“ Jesus said to those Jews who had believed in Him, If you abide in My
word [hold fast to My teachings and live in accordance with them], you are
truly My disciples.” (John 8:31 AMP)
When you look into His eyes you will realize that He’s nobody’s
fool. He runs a tight ship and, in spite
of an intense love for mankind, He won’t buy our slippery logic and politically
correct definitions.
The
good news is that we have a good and patient Heavenly Father. His rules are for
our benefit. Holding fast to Jesus’
teachings brings order, peace and joy into the lives of sincere followers. In an age of mushy truth and unruly leaders
there are still many believers who are opting for solid truth and who are not
only calling themselves Christians, but are holding fast to what Christ
taught. Wise is the person who seeks out
those kind of people – people who still believe 12:00 is midnight.
