Passwords serve as digital padlocks,
only the information beyond the locks can be worth millions of dollars. Because such large fortunes are at stake,
choosing a secure password has become an important science. The shape of the world could easily be
changed if certain information becomes available to those who are not
authorized to deal with it. Thus the
great need for a good password. No
password, no legal access.
Since the beginning of time God has
employed a similar approach. He has kept
the most valuable information in the universe from those who would abuse it by
using a profound but simple “password” of the heart. Jewish wisdom literature
describes it as follows:
A
scoffer seeks Wisdom in vain [for his very attitude blinds and deafens him to
it], but knowledge is easy to him who [being teachable] understands. Go from the
presence of a foolish and self-confident man, for you will not find
knowledge on his lips. The Wisdom [godly Wisdom, which is
comprehensive insight into the ways and purposes of God] of the prudent is to
understand his way, but the folly of [self-confident] fools is to deceive. Fools make a
mock of sin and sin mocks the fools [who are its victims; a sin offering
made by them only mocks them, bringing them disappointment and disfavor], but
among the upright there is the favor of God. (Proverbs 14:6-9 Amplified Bible)
It is clear that God’s critics are
only hurting themselves. Humanistic
arrogance is not God’s password.
Intellect or political persuasion is not God’s password. Skill, ability, social standing and financial
strength don’t move God. A broken and
contrite spirit does move God.
Ironically, many times the cynic
will express their derision of God’s wisdom, thinking that such declarations
make them superior to what they consider simple faith or foolish
mythology. What those people do not realize
is that their very words serve to condemn them to the worst kind of
darkness. Their pride and unbelief lock
them out of the great storehouse of God’s wisdom. Meanwhile the attitude of those who choose
the route of humility and child-like faith serves as a password that makes it
possible for them to experience truth and joy that is not commonly available.
God is all-wise, all-powerful and
very secure in who He is. He has been
kind enough to clue mankind in to a few things, but He is not so desperate as
to spend much time defending himself to puny men who defy His sovereignty. Jesus said it this way: “Give not
that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine,
lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you.” (Matthew
7:6 KJV) What an awesome privilege each
of us has to humble ourselves, put our trust in God, and seek the truth about
time and eternity. Our faith and
obedience serve as our password.
The Message paraphrase of the Bible
expresses the same scripture passage quoted above like this: “Cynics look high
and low for wisdom—and never find it; the open-minded find it right on their
doorstep! Escape
quickly from the company of fools; they're a waste of your time, a waste of
your words. The wisdom of the wise keeps life on track; the foolishness of
fools lands them in the ditch. The stupid ridicule right and wrong, but a moral
life is a favored life.” I want a
favored life. I may not be smart, but
there is no need to be foolish and insult the omniscient Creator. I think I’ll go with the password He has
issued and see what great things He has in store for me and others who humbly
seek Him.
